Okay, so first off: you've been taking point on reaching out to everyone (and thank you for that!), what would you say the main hesitancies toward check-ups are?
Like, pretend you're one of them, help me poke holes in our plan so that I can figure out how to address them in advance?
"we can take care of our own/already conduct our own health screenings."
Okay, so my first instinct is to just go "but we're the fucking professionals here" and to not let their fear of a wounded ego get people killed, but I'll bite my tongue. How about "An experienced health professional can detect many more subtle health issues that may not be immediately be apparent to the untrained eye. There are many diseases and health conditions that are easier to treat in the early stages before they advance too far."
"medical resources would be beneficial not human resources."
Supplies are limited and again, it's best if the people with the most training and experience determine where supplies be best used so that they don't go to waste. This doesn't really apply to first aid supplies and whatever, but I wouldn't trust someone without any pharmacology training to hand out medicine will-nilly. That could kill people.
"is this mandatory? will not receiving a check-up result in not obtaining some future benefit?"
No, get a check-up if you want, or don't get one if you don't want. Doesn't matter to me either way (I won't actually say this part). All screenings are confidential. I don't know what future benefits they're referring to, but we're not the boss of anything here.
"this can't be for nothing, what do you expect in return? -insert serious offer of work exchange-"
Can I just be like, "bro don't reinvent the shitty for-profit American healthcare system here"? It's free. No strings attached.
I didn't go win humanitarian awards handing out free vaccines and operations to start charging for shit now.
in regards to suggesting younger members of the Fort could benefit from the psych team we're trying to roll out: "no"
This is not unexpected. I think all we can do is make it available, and if they come to us, they come to us. I think we probably all need therapy, though.
first things first, here for all of it. glad you're taking the helm in this regards as you sound a whole lot smarter than I would, you know not counting the 6473392 years of schooling you've got on me.
phrasing is on point overall and actually breaking down my full thoughts here in a second text, but before I forget: we've got people crawling out of the woodwork asking about responder training. most of them then say they're then not interested, but still those classes might have done a thing. perhaps this will help even more?
Thanks, dude. I have a lot of experience trying to sound nicer than I am when I really want to go LISTEN UP MOTHERFUCKERS, STOP BEING LITTLE ASSHOLES ABOUT THIS.
Ooooh, that's great! The outreach worked, look at you go! Honestly if they're asking, they're probably interested, but they have to act like they don't care about it because they're scared you'll tell them no. They're probably just scared of rejection. We should ask them again. Training more responders would take some of the pressure off us, too.
Serious question: have you ever gotten the chance to say that or something like it to anyone before? That seems like it'd be so cathartic.
So far both Betancourt twins and Emmett Wright have inquired, so will definitely keep that in mind to bug them about it at some later point. Imagine if we had people trained at all the major communities around here and not every tiny cut required a four alarm response???
don't you lie to me. I've seen your cowboy skills, sir.
Ahh, they're all taciturn types, aren't they? But that they asked at all is a good first step. You're killing it in the outreach department! Let's try to reel 'em in. Having people trained at all the major communities would be a godsend. Would really help with the whole trust thing too if they could go to one of their own.
I honestly have no idea how that happened. I'm as city boy as they come but maybe the life chose me!
maybe things will devolve into total chaos and you'll finally get your chance at this summit meeting?
onion-ogres, yes, those ones. it's nice to be doing SOMETHING again rather than just responding to whatever the crisis of the week is, y'know? the last point you bring up specifically is what I'm hoping; bridge that gap without even having to try it at that point.
are there any cowboy things you haven't tried but need to? we should make a list.
If I told everyone what I really thought, nobody would see me as profesh ever again.
Onion-ogres do have a certain « je ne sais quoi » don't they? And yeah, it IS nice to have something else to do. You're a genius. Everyone's gonna see that when this whole thing is a huge success!
Never shot a gun in my life. Don't own a cool hat. Need to shear a sheep. I don't know?
glad I'm not the only one to take notice of it. AND THANK YOU! if everyone else doesn't get on board with this notion after tomorrow, I'm fucking rioting!
I know some guys that could probably hook you up with all of that?
